What is Earth Hour?
Imagine millions of people around the world flipping the switch at the same time, plunging their homes into candlelit coziness—all to show love for our planet! That’s Earth Hour! Organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), it started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, as a way to raise awareness about climate change and sustainability. Since then, it has grown into a massive global movement, with more than 190 countries participating each year.
Turning off the lights for just one hour may seem like a small act, but it’s a powerful reminder of how simple choices can make a big impact. It’s also a great opportunity to start conversations with children about energy conservation and protecting nature. Plus, it’s a chance to unplug from screens and enjoy fun, creative family time together!
This year, Earth Hour 2025 is happening on Saturday, March 22, from 8:30 – 9:30 p.m. We encourage all our families at Western Heights Montessori to take part in this inspiring global event.
Looking for exciting, screen-free activities to make the most of this special hour? We’ve got you covered! Here are some creative and engaging ideas to enjoy together:
1. Storytelling by Candlelight
Dim the lights, gather the family, and enjoy storytelling the old-fashioned way. Whether you share traditional folktales, make up your own whimsical stories, or read from a favorite book, this activity sparks creativity and imagination. You can even take turns adding to a story, making it a fun, interactive experience. Bonus points if you include a nature or adventure theme to celebrate Earth Hour!

2. Shadow Puppet Shows
Turn a simple flashlight into a magical puppet stage! Using just your hands or cut-out paper shapes, create fun characters and bring a story to life on the wall. Let kids put on their own mini performances with silly voices and dramatic storytelling. This hands-on activity is not only entertaining but also helps develop fine motor skills and confidence in self-expression.

3. Glow-in-the-Dark Science Experiments
Bring a little science magic into Earth Hour with glow-in-the-dark experiments! Try making glowing slime, a homemade lava lamp, or fluorescent water using tonic water and a black light. These simple, hands-on activities introduce children to basic scientific principles while making learning extra fun. Plus, it’s a perfect way to explore light and energy while the rest of the house is dark!

4. Stargazing & Night Walks
Take advantage of the darkened sky to head outdoors and explore the night! Whether it’s stargazing from your backyard, spotting constellations, or going on a peaceful nighttime walk, this activity is a great way to connect with nature. Bring along a star map or a stargazing app to identify planets and constellations together. Listening for nighttime sounds, like owls or crickets, adds an extra element of adventure!

5. Eco-Themed Arts & Crafts
Tap into your creative side by making art from recycled materials! Try painting with natural dyes, crafting a collage from old magazines, or building a DIY bird feeder using a milk carton. Not only is this a fun, hands-on way to celebrate Earth Hour, but it also teaches children about sustainability and repurposing materials in creative ways.

Why Participate in Earth Hour?
Earth Hour is more than just turning off the lights—it’s a chance to reflect on how we can take better care of our planet. Teaching children about environmental responsibility at a young age helps build habits that last a lifetime. By participating in Earth Hour, your family can:
- Learn about energy conservation in a fun and meaningful way
- Reduce electricity use, even for just an hour
- Spend quality time together without distractions
- Inspire kids to think about their role in protecting the environment every day
